Drapery

Well it's that time of year to start thinking about house cleaning and getting our rooms refreshed.  It may vary for each of us but one item that is a possibility would be drapery.  Window treatments can be a big project but not if you start with something simple.  For our next project, we are going to be doing curtains that are very simple and will look just great.  We will be posting that next week so be ready to follow along.

Burp Cloth

Today is the day we are going to post a project.  In sewing this burp cloth we chose to do it in flannel.  We picked a fun pattern but you can do a plain as well or do one side in a print and one side in a plain.  This project is for anyone but a great one for a beginner sewer.

For this project, we used the following:

1/3 yard of flannel

1/3 yard of batting  (We used a cotton batting.)

Thread

To begin, we cut our pieces to a 12" x 20" piece.  We did the flannel on the fold.

You will align each piece up together, flannel will be right side to right side and place the batting on the top.

Now sew your 5/8" seam.  We sewed along the longer edges and around each corner leaving a small opening.  Be sure to trim the corners so they are not too thick and trim your seam allowance.

Invert your piece so right sides are now out.

Next you will slip stitch the opening shut.

To give it a little different finish, we stitched approximately a 1/4" around all of it as this will help to keep the batting from slipping when being washed.

You now have a burp cloth ready to give as a gift.

These make great baby gifts and are always welcomed by the new mother.  You can certainly make any changes that you wish.  You do not have to use a batting in the middle.  You would just sew the two pieces of flannel and leave it at that.  It's whatever you would like to do.  Have fun making these.

Burp Cloth

We are still on the burp cloths.  We will be posting a little different style of burp cloth in a few days.  Remember that you can also sew a simple receiving blanket to go along with the burp cloth.  This makes a wonderful gift for a new mother and her baby.  Your receiving blanket will be just like the burp cloth except a little larger.  Usually a receiving blanket is approximately 45" x 45".  You don't need to add the batting just two pieces of flannel.  Sew and invert, slip stitch and you are finished.

Burp Cloth

Hope you have had a chance to check out the latest project.  Remember that you can alter our project to fit your personality.  This project is great for a beginner as there is not any fancy stitching.  It's a basic straight stitch making it easy for those you have not done much sewing or are just learning.  Omitting the batting will make it even easier as you are just sewing two pieces of fabric together and turning it inside out.  These make wonderful baby gifts for family, friends or even charities.  Once you get started, you won't want to stop.

Sewing Project Next

Get those sewing machines ready as we will be putting our first project on the next post.  This project is a simple project and makes a great gift.  We will be using flannel which is really nice this time of the year.  Flannel is easy to work with so if you are a beginner this is a great project to start with.

If you haven't checked out the classes that we are offering, please do so.  They are wonderful gift ideas that you can make for the upcoming holiday.  They are posted on our "retail store" button or our "blog" button.  You can give us a call or email us to sign up.

Have a great weekend.

Get Ready to Sew

Good afternoon.  The first project we will be posting this week will be a simple one for anyone to start, even a beginner.  If you have not done much sewing, do not be discouraged.  There are many simple projects that you can start with and as you get to know your machine and you have the love for sewing, you will be able to progress on to more advanced sewing projects.  It does not matter how fast you sew as long as you finish it.  This is not a timed project.  Just enjoy and have fun making something.  As you continue to sew, you will find that it becomes easier and easier.
